Bataan LGUs inked a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and power firm GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd. Co. (GMEC) to implement a project for mangrove propagation and protection.
The flagship environmental project, called Baka1Bataan, in partnership with the DENR, Provincial Government of Bataan, municipality of Orani, and Tubo-tubo Fisherfolks Association, calls for GMEC to provide P7 million.
According to GMEC AVP Arcel Madrid, mangroves can sequester three to five times more carbon than forest trees.
Madrid cited international studies and research showing the positive effects of mangrove to the environment, such as mitigating climate change and supporting marine biodiversity and economic sustainability.
He said the project adopts a holistic approach revolving around adoption, protection, sustainable livelihood, and ecotourism which will leave a mark of a positive environmental, coastal, and community impact.
