DHSUD rolls out housing projects for Mindanao IPs

DHSUD Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario is joined by Maj. Gen. Romeo Brawner, Commanding General of the Philippine Army, and Balingasag, Misamis Oriental Mayor Alexis Quina, in spearheading the signing of a memorandum of agreement and groundbreaking ceremonies for five housing projects intended for members of the Higaonon tribes in Regions 10 and 13.

Just days after rolling out housing projects intended for indigenous peoples (IPs) in Luzon, Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario early this month launched more housing projects for tribespeople – this time in Mindanao.

Secretary Del Rosario spearheaded the signing of a memorandum of agreement and groundbreaking ceremonies for five housing projects intended for members of the Higaonon tribes in Regions 10 and 13.

The housing construction and land development are in line with the Department’s mandate of providing Filipino families, most especially the underserved that includes IPs, access to decent, sustainable, resilient and more affordable housing communities nationwide.

The housing projects under the government’s BALAI Housing Program will be funded using developers’ incentivized compliance to balanced housing.

Under the scheme, 250 housing units will be established in Brgy. Kibanban in Balingasag town and Brgy. Minalwang in Claveria – both in Misamis Oriental, Brgy. Kamagong in Nasipit and Brgy. Bokbokan in Las Nieves in Agusan Del Norte, and Brgy. Sinakungan in Esperanza, Agusan Del Sur.

“These projects are in compliance with President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive of prioritizing IPs in the provision of safe, resilient and affordable housing communities,” Secretary Del Rosario stressed.

Aside from the housing units, the construction of five tribal halls in each location, as well as a multi-purpose covered court in Brgy. Samay, Balingasag, will likewise be included in the projects.

According to Secretary Del Rosario, such undertakings are likewise part of the government efforts under the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict’s initiatives to insulate IP villages in the far-flung communities from communist influence.

That way, the housing czar said, citizens, most especially IPs, will not be duped into joining the terrorist group.

“Also, these projects will ensure the safety of our IPs, keep them away from harm both natural and man-made,” Secretary Del Rosario added.

The latest IP housing projects will be implemented jointly by DHSUD and the local government units concerned, supported by various stakeholders including the Philippine Army particularly the 52nd Engineer Brigade, TESDA, National Commission for Indigenous People and non-government organizations.

Earlier, Secretary Del Rosario broke ground for a couple of housing projects intended for IPs in the provinces of Aurora and Nueva Ecija.

Two-hundred and forty-five Dumagat families in Barangay Matawe, Dingalan town, Aurora, and 95 others in Brgy. Malinao, Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija are slated to benefit from the soon-to-rise resettlement complexes.
